The Application Process
Departments are free to choose how they would like to handle the application process. Most departments use the USC Aiken Student Employment Application. If you are planning to hire a student and would like a copy of the USC Aiken Student Employment Application, contact us and we'll send one to you.
It is important to note that Career Services doesn't handle any part of the application process. Departments provide the applications to students, students turn the applications in at the respective department, and the department selects potential candidates and interviews them.
Once a student accepts a position on campus, the hiring supervisor and the student should complete the first half of a Student Hire Paperwork Checklist.
The student employee then takes the Checklist to Career Services and completes hire paperwork (including E-Verify/I-9) and a brief student employee orientation.
Once all paperwork is complete, the checklist is signed and given to the student to return to the hiring supervisor.
Once the hiring supervisor has received the completed checklist, the student may begin working. The hiring supervisor must also "hire" the student in VIP. Don't be alarmed if you can't find your student in VIP when you try to hire them because the hiring process for new employees takes a couple of weeks to complete. Once you are able to hire the student, remember that the VIP "Begin Date" must be the same as, or later than, the hire date listed on the Student Hire Paperwork Checklist.
Points to Remember:
- No one can work without having a completed checklist. NO EXCEPTIONS!!
- Departments should not distribute I-9's to student employees.
- New hires must have original documents to complete the I-9.
- Direct deposit and W-4's are all done online through VIP.
- International students cannot work without a Social Security Card.
- International students cannot be E-Verified without a Social Security number.
Student Employee Evaluations
While it's not required, it's a great idea to spend some time at the end of every semester, evaluating your student's work performance. Giving your student feedback, both positive and negative, will help your student grow into a more productive team member, both now and in future years. Feel free to create your own evaluation, or use ours.
Student Employee of the Year
The Student Employee of the Year will be selected on an annual basis to recognize outstanding student employees at USCA. As the Awards Banquet draws near, you will receive an informative email from Corey Feraldi about how to nominate a deserving student.
